Communication skills throughout the audit assignment
OVERVIEW
An internal auditor must be able to deliver messages – both verbally and in writing – and this in a range of contexts and to a variety of audiences. This may include documenting the audit work in a structured manner, answering questions posed by email and presenting the audit report to senior management. Improving written and spoken skills is essential to the job of the internal auditor.
TARGET AUDIENCE
In this training, auditors of all levels will learn to become more comfortable and skilled to structurally communicate the various elements of the audit work.
This training focusses mostly on written skills to document the audit work, and to deliver key messages to various stakeholders. To conclude the training, the written preparation of the audit report is translated into a verbal presentation to senior management.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
• Reporting according to IPPF
• Written communication
o Mapping of:
– Types of written communication
– The needs of the readers o Bringing structure into written communication
o Components of audit work, including:
– Audit Assignment
– Risk and control matrix
– Process descriptions
o How to write better audit reports
– Risks, findings, recommendations, summaries
o Improve style as well as layout
o Learn techniques on proofreading and correcting
• Verbal communication
o Bring the key messages of the audit report to various stakeholders

PREREQUISITES
Auditors should already have experience with written communication on different aspects of their audit work, as well as having experience in communicating audit results to stakeholders outside Internal Audit.

About the facilitator
Mark Dekeyser
IIA Bel trainer
Mark Dekeyser is an expert trainer and consultant related to IIA Belgium. He has a CISA certificate and is also member of ISACA. Between 2012 and 2021 he served as a member of the IIA Belgium Board of Directors and of the Executive Committee. He teaches a variety of courses, among which Risk Based Auditing, Digital Transformation, Data Analysis and many more. As a consultant he's involved in performing periodic Audit Quality Assessments for member organizations of IIA Belgium.
